Newcastle is a picturesque Eastside city in King County, Washington. Although Newcastle was officially incorporated in 1994, its roots run deep, dating back to the late 19th century. The city played a pivotal role in the development of Seattle and the surrounding region, primarily as one of the area's first coal mining hubs. Newcastle's rail connection to Seattle was the first in King County, significantly contributing to the growth of the Port of Seattle. The timber industry also played an important role in the city's early history.
Coal production in Newcastle began in the 1870s, and by the time the mine closed in 1963, over 13 million tons of coal had been extracted. The city's coal mining heritage and the contributions of the many Chinese laborers who worked in the mines are honored in local landmarks such as Coal Creek, Coal Creek Parkway, and the Coal Creek and China Creek golf courses.
Newcastle also offers stunning views, numerous trails, and a variety of local shops and restaurants—making it a place where you'll quickly feel at home!
